Miyam Bialik: Teen Icon as Blossom to Unconventional Mom

Miyam Bialik (photo from http://www.holisticmoms.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/mayim-final1.jpg)If you remember 1990s American television, you likely remember Miyam Bialik as Blossom. Blossom was the teen who hung around with Six and had a clueless brother named Joey. Now Bialik is becoming known for alternative or holistic parenting.

Bialik, who received a doctorate degree in neuroscience, is using and promoting family bed sharing, home schooling, home birth, and nursing on demand--breast-feeding based on your child's needs, not a schedule. She also promotes elimination communication, which means the parents learn to observe when the child is ready to "go potty." Her first son was potty trained at 12 months.

Two of our small family have worked professionally with children, believe in holistic methods, and most if not all of us were fans of the TV program Blossom. (You may also have see Bialik in the film Kalamazoo? and while playing Bette Midler's character as a young girl in the movie Beaches).

Another former teen becomes a mother. Shameful.

Children need loving care, not ignorance, being ignored, and being raised to violence by being "spanked on demand." Thanks to Blossom and The Loveshade Family for getting this message out there. There's nothing more important than being a mommy or daddy. And it's important for children to learn that their bodies and the bodies of their parents are for expressions of love, not of shame.

That's wonderful what she's doing. So long mothers have been looked down on like they're not doing anything important. And a neuroscientist? Good for you, girl!

This is from the coddle your children, cater to their every whim, "violence leads to violenne" anti-spanking coalition. When spanking is done in a controlled, loving manner, it can be effective discipline. The Bible says, "Spare the rod and spoil the child." Children are running amok nowadays because parents are afraid to spank.

I think Miyam is doing a great job. Keep it up.

I have never seen Blossom, but do support the rights of women. A return to the natural days sounds heathful for families.

I'm new to your blog but I'll be back. Parents think they have to beat their kids to keep them in line. But doesn't violence lead to violence? Mothers have always nursed their babies on demand until the modern day, when a factory became more important than family. Good for you, Miyam!

Sounds a little too natural to me. Next they'll be eating fruit off trees and running around naked. Eden's over. And yes spare the rod and spoil the child. A good whipping never hurt anybody.

I want ask to those who think being violent with kids help. How many people convicted of violent felonies do you know who weren't treated violently as kids?

Families should sleep together and be naked together. That will give good memories for the future.

My parents treated me like Miyam is treating her kids. You think they ever tried to spank me? And look how I turned out.

I'm a huge Blossom fan. I guess its dating me but that show was great I grew up with it. Love what shes doing now and your blog. Your site is on my bookmarks!
