July 14 (Saturday)

Today was the wedding.  Several people left the event site early for that; I
didn't leave until the 9.45 hours caravan with the wedding scheduled for 11.00
hours.  Beth has gotten quite skilled at organizing things and keeping people
on track, and we left right on time.

I'm switching to "mundane" aliases for the wedding; we use so many different
names sometmes I almost forget who I am.

Brooke and Hugh were married at the home of Dave, Fiona, and Lisa.  It was an
outdoor wedding, but we were misted and as it was a morning wedding the
temperature stayed in the 80s.  It's been unusually hot and is getting hotter.
Brooke had wanted me doing the wedding photography, while Hugh had someone else
in mind; I conceded to Hugh's choice, but took some shots.  While I've used a
digital camera many times, I still have to transition from film to digital
professionally.  Using a professional-quality digital camera is a great deal
different from both a professional film and amateur digital camera.  In spite
of publishing hundreds of photos, I almost feel like I need to go back to
school to learn how to take pictures.  As a photographer, I'm still stuck in
the 20th century.

The wedding was something of a mix of
Wiccan, general Pagan, Roman Catholic,
and secular.  The bride and groom did jump the broom at the end; I had no idea
until now that this is becoming increasingly popular among African Americans.
Reportedly slaves had been forced to do so, but it was adapted as a voluntary
custom apparently starting with the airing of the miniseries
Roots.

What was perhaps most untraditional was the clothing.  Dress was informal, and
by "informal" I mean some people, including the bride and groom, wore
swimsuits.  I wore blue jeans and a T-shirt that had been colored years ago by
the bride and friends, a shirt I value but rarely wear because I don't want it
getting worn out.  Ironically, the bride didn't even remember it.  I also wore
my preferred footwear, nothing.  I won't go into what everyone wore as Lorien
and I are both posting accounts and I'm sure e will describe the garb of the
wedding party.

The reception was at the same place, and included a pool and hot tub although
as the temperature had reached the 90s most people avoided the tub including
me.  We had thought about having pool games, but nothing really got organized,
which was fine, although I did give Emma, Christopher, and Jeffery a ride on my
back, and briefly had Lorien and Mindy.  Lorien, Mindy, myself and others used
to do that much more on their visits, but like many things that's changed.

Glori talked to me about Matthew.  They had been together the last time Matthew
came out, and apparently Matthew wanted them to be more fully together this
time, but Glori was hesitant.  I've known Glori, who is now almost a legal
adult, for many years.  I remember that Glori as a young girl seemed very
mature, then in the early teens resisted growing up.  Glori, now an older teen,
is still finding emself, which is perfectly natural.

Afterward, some of us returned to the event site, although the bride and groom
not surprisingly went their own way.  I almost felt like the wedding was the
end of the big weekend get-together.  I think most of those who didn't go to
the wedding left.  Our two official vendors were unfortunately pretty
disappointed.  Note to self: next time, avoid scheduling an event on the same
weekend as an off-site wedding that would include many of the same people.

Some fire ants apparently decided that after the rain was a good time to start
building a new neighborhood--right by one of our vendors.  Unfortunately I
didn't have any diatomaceous earth with which to welcome them, nor did I have
nor do we use poison on any living thing on site.  So I used baking soda mixed
with powered cat food.

I do make a habit of always putting something out to feed the insects on the
edges of popular areas before we set up.  It requires both sugar and animal
products, but not necessarily meat--someone I know spreads ice cream on the
ground.  Let them find a handy source of food a couple or more hours before you
bring out your own food.  You'll get much less insects.  Unfortunately, that
doesn't always catch fire ants migrating after a rain.

We had a small fire with music, singing, and dancing.  Some of us had something
of a platonic group sleep under the pavilion.  I won't include everyone, but
those near me by mundane name were (in order from left to right) Beth, Raijin
(whose mundane name I don't know), Mindy, myself, Glori, and Christopher, whom
I took to the motorhome to go potty once during the night.  For some reason the
boy doesn't want to have anything to do with portable toilets.  Christopher
wears diapers at night, which older sister Emma who doesn't loves pointing out.

I believe Glori goes

Jumping the broom
is popular at Wiccan
weddings too.
I wrote what the
wedding party and
several other people
wore. Harmony

I feel people had to
get ready for the
festival then for the
wedding then for the
festival and all in the
heat. Probably not
good to do both.

The reason is
Christopher thinks
porta-potties have
monsters!
